20-Wonderful Days of Giving - Day 11
Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary
Founded in 2005, The Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary was started by Alana Miller and her daughter. When she was volunteering at a local shelter, she saw that no one was interested in adopting the blind cats. The result was a nearly 100% euthanasia rate. She adopted her first blind cat, Louie, when a man was going to leave his six weeks old kitten in the PetSmart parking lot if the shelter wouldn't accept him. Alana said, "I will take him", and soon after she and her daughter took in their second, third and fourth blind cats.
In 2011, they began also providing a safe sanctuary for FELV+ (leukemia positive) and FIV+ (feline immunodeficiency virus) cats. These cats are normally killed daily at vets and shelters because they test positive for these viruses. As Alana says, "We do not kill people because they have an immune system illness or leukemia, why would we kill a healthy animal because they test positive?"
One thing that makes the rescue unique is that they don't adopt out the cats, they provide homes for them (there are 61 shown on their website including Izzy and Nugget, pictured above) so they can live out their lives in a place of love and caring. While you can't adopt them you can donate to this 501c3 charitable organization to help take care of these special kitties. You can also watch the cats live (including Izzy and Creamsicle picture above) at the Rescue's website. Meow!
