Pet Safety on Thanksgiving

We wait all year for the bevy of gastronomical delights that Thanksgiving brings to our tables. And it’s tempting to want to share our good fortune with our favorite family members—yes, we’re talking about Fido and Mittens.

But, did you know that turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pie aren’t good for your pet? Here’s the scoop thanks to information provided by Trupanion, a leader in medical insurance for cats and dogs.

Turkey – a small amount of lean, light meat is okay but not so much for skin, fat and dark meat. Even more importantly, cooked bones can cause choking or be ingested and damage your pet’s digestive system. Not so fun fact: a 5 oz serving of dark meat turkey for your small dog can be the caloric equivalent of an entire 8-inch pumpkin pie for you! Yowza!

Stuffing – can contain onions, chives, garlic and scallions, all of which are toxic to pets, not to mention the butter which also makes it a fatty “treat” that your pet doesn’t need.

Mashed potatoes – bland mashers are okay but who doesn’t like to include pet toxic ingredients like garlic, onions, scallions and chives in their special Thanksgiving recipe?

Pie – your pet doesn’t need the pumpkin pie and all of the sugary sweetness that comes with it. Instead consider one of the many dog-friendly versions that you can find at your local pet store.

Wishing you and your pets a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving from Daily Kibble.
